Systematic Steps To Accelerate The Completion Of Rumah Mesra Rakyat (RMR) Housing Nationwide
SELANGOR, 17th July 2023 – YB Tuan Haji Akmal Nasrullah bin Mohd Nasir, Deputy Minister of Local Government Development, conducted a site visit and attended the house key handover session for the Rumah Mesra Rakyat (RMR) program under the supervision of Syarikat Perumahan Negara Berhad (SPNB) in Selangor today.
Starting from 2021, SPNB has introduced a phased construction system for the Rumah Mesra Rakyat (RMR) program nationwide, incorporating standardized building designs and more systematic construction methods.
Under this approach, the size of RMR units has been aligned with other subsidized housing programs under KPKT, set at 750 square feet across the country starting from 2022. Previously, RMR units had different sizes based on localities, with 650 square feet for RMR on islands, 850 square feet for RMR in Sabah and Sarawak, and 1,000 square feet for RMR in Peninsular Malaysia. This alignment was undertaken by SPNB to address challenges in the construction sector due to rising prices of construction materials and labor.
According to YB Deputy Minister, SPNB has also introduced six new designs for the RMR program, allowing applicants to choose a suitable design based on their plot size.
"I believe that through these new designs, RMR recipients will take pride in calling these houses their dream homes. SPNB took the initiative to develop these new designs based on feedback received from RMR applicants while maintaining the features of a livable and conducive home, with three bedrooms and two bathrooms in each RMR unit."
"As for the construction method, SPNB has improved the process to make it more systematic. After erecting the columns, RMR construction contractors will first complete the roofing before proceeding with the wall and floor works. This process allows the contractors to continue construction comfortably in any weather condition, thereby expediting the completion timeline of RMR units," he added.
Furthermore, this step taken by SPNB will also reduce labor costs, positively impacting the contractors' profitability and enabling them to build more RMR units.
YB Deputy Minister also emphasized that the Government will continue to promote the use of modern construction methods such as Modular or Industrialized Building System (IBS) to enhance construction efficiency.
In Selangor, from 2019 until 2023, SPNB has successfully built 902 RMR units, while 294 units are currently under construction. Meanwhile, the total number of completed RMR units nationwide amounts to 58,425.
SPNB remains committed to prioritizing housing projects for the people under the supervision of KPKT, empowering the housing agenda, and fostering the well-being of all citizens through the framework of Malaysia Madani.
